Confidentiality is imperative for establishing trust in the doctor-patient relationship, and therefore, the success of your overall treatment. Physicians are legally and ethically bound to vigorously safeguard your personal information.
If you choose to use your reimbursement option for out-of-network benefits, Dr. Cockrell will provide the minimum amount of information necessary on your invoice so you may get paid. Generally this consists of a diagnosis and type of visit code.
North Carolina has enacted laws that confer special privilege in regard to psychotherapy notes which are kept separate from your medical record. This privilege generally allows psychiatrists to withhold psychotherapy notes in judicial proceedings. Psychotherapy notes do not contain information about a medical diagnosis or treatment.
Prospective patients should be aware that as an independent physician, Dr. Cockrell does not design care according to managed care programs, and does not participate in any preferred provider networks (this includes Medicare and Medicaid programs).
Dr. Cockrell encourages all patients to understand the nature of their insurance plans, including their deductibles, and availability of out-of-network reimbursement prior to scheduling their initial visit. In many cases the difference in coverage between participating and nonparticipating physicians is minor, particularly in the case of outpatient treatments. Full payment of fees is expected at the time of service.
If your employer offers a Health Care or Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA/DCFSA) you may be able to use this for payment. Most FSA claim forms do not require treatment information in order to provide reimbursement. Some patients prefer to pay for psychiatric treatment from their own resources to avoid disclosing personal information.
